Tour Overview

If Marangu is the "Coca-Cola" route, then the Machame Route is the "Whiskey" route. It is the second most popular and one of the most scenic routes on the mountain. All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside. It is done over 6 days, so acclimatization is easier, and the success rate is fairly high. It is for physically fit people with some hiking experience. Descent is down the Mweka trail staying at the Mweka or Millenium camp the final night on the mountain.

Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 : Machame Gate (1790M) To Machame Camp (3010M)

Location: Machame Camp

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

One hour’s drive from Moshi lies the gate to the Machame route, where we complete park formalities, meet our crew of porters and start to climb! The first section of the route climbs steadily and passes through magnificent, dense rainforest. This path is less well-trodden so it can get somewhat overgrown in places and it is often wet and muddy underfoot.

Day 2 : Machame Camp (3010M) To Shira Camp (3845M)

Location: Shira Camp

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our route continues on up through the forest until we reach the steep ascent onto the Shira Plateau, where there are rewarding views of the mountain. Looking back, you will be able to see Mt Meru rising high above Arusha town in the distance.

Day 3 : Shira Cave (3845M) To Barranco Camp (3960M)

Location: Barranco Camp

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and finally reach camp The day has been spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but we have followed the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to aid your body’s acclimatization to altitude

Day 4 : Barranco Camp (3960M) To Karanga Camp (3963M)

Location: Karanga Camp

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our day starts by descending into the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga valley to our night’s camp at Karanga camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.

Day 5 : Karanga Camp (3963) To Barafu Camp (4640M)

Location: Barafu Camp

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12 pm to start the climb to the summit.

Day 6 : Barafu Camp (4,680 Meters) To Uhuru Peak (5,895 Meters) And Then Mweka Camp (3,100 Meters)

Location: Millenium Camp, Uhuru Peak

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You will be awoken around 23:30 with hot tea and biscuits. Hopefully you have managed to get a few hours’ sleep; don’t worry if you haven’t as most people struggle to sleep before summit night. Do however make sure that all your kit, including warm clothes, headlamp, insulated water reserves and snacks are ready for a sharp departure at 24:00. The trek up Kibo is steep and slow. The trick is to keep your momentum moving forward, one step at a time. It takes about 6-8 hours to reach the top of the crater rim where you will see the sign for Stella Point (5,739 meters). You still have another 156 meters of altitude to walk around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). After reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro, a 4.5km / 3 mile ascent, you still have a 11km / 7 mile descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters)! Mweka is situated in the upper part of the rainforest zone. The richness of oxygen and moisture in the air will be a very welcome surprise.

Day 7 : Mweka Camp (3,100 Meters) To Mweka Gate (1,640 Meters)

Location: Mweka gate

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

In the morning after breakfast you will be trekking down to Mweka gate. The trek is a pleasant one through the lower rain-forested slopes and down to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). Although you cover 9km / 5.5 miles, the trek only takes 3-4 hours. Assuming you successfully reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak you will be presented with official certificates – a green certificate for the former and a gold certificate for the latter. It is customary to tip your trekking crew before being transported back to your hotel in Moshi.

Mount Kilimanjaro hike 7 days Machame route

31-Jan-2022

Because I've never had much experience climbing mountains or even going on basic walks. When trekking up to the summit, I looked for a route that had the gentlest slope. I discovered the path on the Internet to be the Rongai route. I then validated it with the company's managing director. There was little or no rain when I started the route. I'm glad I escaped the rain, which would have made the ascent more difficult. So, from the day we started trekking till we reached the summit, my entire 7-day Machame route was spectacular, with an incredible Kilimanjaro Hiking Team experience. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Safari exceeded my expectations for a visit in South Africa. And of course I realized that I could have started with Tanzania since I spent many days in other parks for northing, but all in all it was contagious. Great, thanks!

My climbing equipment for Kilimanjaro was insufficient, so I had to get new equipment. It was therefore very convenient to have my booking handled by this tour business, which has a large store for mountain equipment. The driver who picked us up from the airport knew everything and never forgot about us. We met an excellent mountain support crew who worked tirelessly to help us reach the peak.

We were persuaded to add another day to our 7-day hike via the Machame route due to acclimatization, and we chose this choice because it boosted our chances of summiting Kilimanjaro. The experience was designed to be unforgettable. Everything was organized for us professionally by the staff. We were delighted we had brought the certificates home with us as we ascended Mount Kilimanjaro. We had great meals thanks to the cook's mobile restaurant while we camped on the Mountain. We adored your Kilimanjaro hiking crew and Serengeti Safari guide; we're not sure if you train them or not, but they're fantastic.

We completed the 7 days Machame route hike Kilimanjaro. Our group of 3 peoples had an incredible experience. The level of client care was so high that other climbers asked which company we booked with. The cook we had was able to cater for special requests that we had.

I like the food served during the walk, and the guides were fantastic in bringing us close to the mountain summit's success rate. Because the height of the mountains alters most of our biology, it was difficult for me to feel hungry. We always had a different supper after a thousand meters above sea level, which corresponded to the height. I was pleased to be able to enjoy the evening walks around the huts, as we went to the Zebra rock, which was quite distinctive, and dinner was ready when we returned. The mountain air was crisp and refreshing. There was something about it that I liked. It was a fantastic adventure that I will never forget! I also went to Tanzania's three most famous parks: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. They are different and very interesting. We were provided with everything necessary: good transport, professional guide, water, food, tents and sleeping bags.
